Highlands Lillies, Diptych, Oil on canvas, 36”x 36”, $2,500

For the last few years, I have primarily produced pieces in smaller sizes because they seem to do well in various art shows, but I must say I really enjoy painting in a larger format occasionally. This piece is a diptych, which is a more eloquent way to say a complete work that is a painting on two canvases and typically hung together, although this piece and some I have seen from others have been designed such that they could be sold/hung separately. In this case, each canvas is 18”x 36.” The inspiration for this piece was a pond in the front of Half-Mile Farm which is a beautiful inn near Highlands, NC. We did not stay there, but enjoyed walking the grounds. This one took quite some time to plan and think through the composition, recognizing the two pieces might sell separately or together. I am not sure what it is, perhaps a Monet influence, but I have always liked ponds with Lillies.

Turner Barn in Fog, Oil on panel, $575

Most people from Nashville south to Franklin are probably familiar with what my grandchildren call “Mr. Turner’s Barn” on Franklin Road in Brentwood. For as many years as I can remember, Mr. Turner displays a large painting of the manger scene on the north facing roof of the barn at Christmas. In 2010, the barn was damaged in the Nashville flood. The current barn is only a shell, but thankfully he continues to display the scene. One morning I was riding my bike near here very early, and the site of the sun coming up over the fog captured my breath. I said I must paint this. A friend of mine who is also an artist, painted the barn and manager scene at night a number of years ago,  and we have a print we display each year as part of our Christmas decorations. Based on the number of attempts it took, I learned fog is difficult to make believable. Hope you will think I am close.

Thank you for your support and encouragement.
